Nothing Like Construction Paper For Fiber Quota

I'm a nutrition advocate. What that really translates to is that I know a lot but I have a hard time following it.

Nope... don't know much about nutrients and vitamins but ask me how many carbs make a serving (15g)... or how many proteins make a serving (7g)... or how to translate the sugars from milk into calcium and I can do that...

Do you know how many grams of fiber you should consume a day? Twenty-five. Easy-peasy to consume that if all you eat is Broccoli.

So imagine my conflicting feelings yesterday when Sydney's GI specialist says (in the same breath) Sydney's on the right track and I want to see her get 25 grams of fiber.

My eyes dropped to the floor. I have spent the last 4 years vigilantly watching everything she eats, not to mention what I have to do for myself. How in the world will I get my kid 25 grams of fiber when on a good day I might make 20 for myself??? She has whole grain waffles for breakfast...whole wheat bread for lunches... we only let her eat pears and apples. We force water down her like we want her to drown from the inside.

The Gods at the Today show heard my prayer today and focused on high-fiber, low sugar foods.

Rasberries have more fiber than grapes? Asparagus more than beets? Skim milk is better than Vanilla soy milk (sugar and calcium thing there)? Lean 99% sirloin has less fat and more iron than ground turkey (skin and dark meat included sometime).

So today Sydney tried a new item for lunch... a ham and cream cheese wrap. La Tortilla Factory makes a tortilla that has TWELVE grams of fiber and is only 100 calories. I live off these and now she will too. I'm sure she won't mind that it feels like eating construction paper.

Next step is packing a small snack of Fiberone cereal in her lunch box. I'd love for her to eat more veggies but that's a challenge. Her head spun around in circles with a piece of lettuce in her sandwich and she screamed, "I DON"T WANT SALAD!!!"

Great article I found with some ideas... of course, it says kids her age should get 9 grams a day... so again, I roll my eyes at 25.

25 grams of fiber? That is just gross. Especially for a kidlet. What's she supposed to do, gnaw down a tree? Yuck!
