I am already digressing but those are my thoughts of extra-curricular activities.
In all my life where I actually remember my life, I always felt left out when the word "cartwheel" came up. Can't do it. My body physically won't let my feet go above my head. But I vowed my children will do one. We tried Little Gym but it never seemed to happen so I took Sydney out of that and we put her into a tumbling/trampoline class at a gym. Loves it. After a week of spring break camp, the kid literally just has to work on the landing at this point. I'm so proud of her.
Her other class is a Hippety-Hoppity dance class. She was less enthusiastic about this. It's only 45 minutes long but at about minute 38, she's dragging axx and standing by the wall. We had a discussion about it a few times.
I noticed lately though that her attitude toward class has changed. Much more enthusiasm. I believe it was the discussion we had about three weeks ago:
Me: Your costume for the June recital should be coming soon!
S: Oh good! After the recital I'm ALLLL Done with hip hop!
Me: Yes, that's one way of looking at. But honey, I really thought you wanted to be a cheerleader.
S:
Me: Well, cheerleading takes practice and that's why you're in these two classes. Cheerleaders these days must dance hip hop and do cartwheels.
S: Oh. All I want to do is be a cheerleader.
Since that conversation Sydney has been very enthusiastic about dance and is even more enthusiastic about the little black skorts she can wear to them.
If she wants to live a dream, she needs to work for it.

My kids each have 1 extra for this very reason. If they were to do something at the same time in the same place I might consider letting them each have another. If I really wanted them to do something, say piano lessons, I wouldn't count that as their 1. I can't imagine staying sane running kids all over town. I'm a big fan of unscheduled time.
